Is the Oura Ring Gen3 still worth it in 2026?
Research-based: built from manufacturer specs and published studies. Not a hands-on test.

Our situation
We bought an Oura Ring Gen3, pay for the membership, and have worn it every night for more than a year. It has scuffs on the coating, and we rate it 4.5 out of 5 in our long-term Oura review. We have not used the Ring 4 or Ring 5, so the comparisons below use Oura's own specs.
Keep it if it still works
Most of what makes an Oura useful sits in the membership, not the ring. You pay the same US$5.99 a month or CA$7.99 a month whichever ring you wear.[3] The Gen3 is also the model with the most published research: an Oura-funded study of 96 adults found it matched lab sleep studies on total sleep and most stages,[4] and an independent 2025 meta-analysis found no significant average difference from lab measures.[5] Replacing a working Gen3 buys you new hardware, not better evidence.
What the newer rings change
| Ring 4 | Ring 5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | US$349 to $499[1] | CA$529 to CA$649 (Canadian store)[2] |
| Battery (Oura's claim) | 5 to 8 days[1] | 6 to 9 days[2] |
| Membership | Same plan as the Gen3[3] | |
Charging is one of the two things that bug us about the Gen3, so longer battery claims are the most tempting part of an upgrade. Whether they hold up in daily use, we cannot say yet.
When to switch instead
The other thing that bugs us is the monthly fee. If that is what is wearing on you too, an upgrade inside Oura does not fix it. Ultrahuman says its rings have no recurring fee to access your data,[6] though we found no published sleep-lab validation for them. We weigh that trade in Oura vs Ultrahuman and is Oura worth it without the subscription?
Our call
- Own a working Gen3: keep it.
- Battery is your main complaint: look at the Ring 4 (paid link) or Ring 5 (paid link), knowing the battery figures are Oura's claims.
- The subscription is your main complaint: compare a no-subscription ring before spending more with Oura.
Buying in Canada? You can also see Oura Ring 5 on Amazon.ca (paid link). This link opens the Silver, size 8 listing. Select the size you established with the Ring 5 sizing kit before ordering. We have not tested Ring 5.

Common questions
Should I upgrade from the Oura Gen3 to the Ring 4 or Ring 5?
Only if something specific bothers you, such as battery life. Oura lists 5 to 8 days for the Ring 4 and 6 to 9 days for the Ring 5. The membership and app are the same, so a working Gen3 still gives you the same core scores.
Is the Oura Gen3 accurate?
It is the most studied Oura model. An Oura-funded study of 96 adults and an independent 2025 meta-analysis both found it close to lab sleep studies for total sleep time, with stage estimates less precise. Independent validation of newer models is thinner.
Should I buy a used Oura Gen3?
Be careful. You still need the membership for most features, and a used ring's battery has already aged. Compare the total cost with a new Ring 4 or a ring that has no subscription.
