Is Oura worth it without the subscription?
Research-based: built from manufacturer specs and published studies. Not a hands-on test.

What you get without paying
Oura's own answer is that the ring and app "will still function, but the insights, personal health data, and benefits you receive will be much more limited."[2] Its help centre is more specific. Without an active membership you can see:[1]
- your three daily scores: Readiness, Sleep and Activity
- the ring's battery level
- basic profile information and app settings
- Oura's Explore content
You lose the detail behind those scores and the API, but you can still download your data.[1] So without a membership you get three numbers a day and none of the trends or explanations behind them, which are what most owners use to change anything.
What the membership costs
| United States | Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | US$5.99 | CA$7.99 |
| Yearly | US$69.99 | CA$89.99 |
| Two years, yearly plan | about US$140 | about CA$180 |
Prices are Oura's, before tax, and new members get the first month free.[2] For scale, Oura lists the Ring 4 at US$349 to $499.[3] Over two years the membership adds roughly 30 to 40 percent to what you pay for a Ring 4.
Our owner's take
We have worn an Oura Gen3 with the membership every night for more than a year, and gave it 4.5 out of 5 in our long-term Oura review. The membership is the main complaint. Asked whether we would buy again, the answer was to compare Oura against a no-subscription ring first, because a roughly $9-a-month fee (the Canadian price after tax) grates.
When a no-subscription ring makes more sense
Ultrahuman says its rings have "no recurring subscription fees for accessing your data." On its Canadian store, the Ring AIR lists at C$479 and the store says no subscription is required.[4][5] We have not used an Ultrahuman ring. There is also no peer-reviewed sleep-lab validation of Ultrahuman's rings that we could find, while Oura's Gen3 has several studies behind it. The trade is cost against evidence; we lay it out in Oura vs Ultrahuman.
Who should pay for Oura
- Pay if you want to see why a score dropped, follow trends over weeks, and change habits based on them.
- Skip the membership only if three daily scores are honestly all you will look at. Even then, a ring without a fee usually costs less over its lifetime.
- Skip rings entirely if you are worried about a sleep disorder. A doctor and a proper sleep study come first.
To compare the current Oura membership terms (paid link) with a no-subscription ring (paid link), check both companies' pages before you buy, since prices and features change.
