Oura vs Ultrahuman: subscription or no subscription?

Research-based: built from manufacturer specs and published studies. Not a hands-on test.

Short answer: Choose Oura if published accuracy evidence and a mature app matter more to you than the monthly fee. Choose Ultrahuman if you will not pay a subscription: it charges once for the ring. We have worn an Oura Gen3 for over a year but have not used an Ultrahuman ring, so that side of this comparison rests on what Ultrahuman states. US buyers should also check availability, because a 2025 trade ruling banned Ultrahuman ring imports.

The real difference is the subscription

Both rings track sleep, heart rate and temperature from your finger. What separates them is how you pay. Oura charges for the ring and then a monthly or yearly membership; without it, Oura shows only your three daily scores.[2] Ultrahuman says it charges nothing recurring to access your data.[3] Over two years, Oura's yearly plan adds about US$140 or CA$180.

We pay for Oura and have for more than a year. In our Oura review we gave it 4.5 out of 5, and the fee was the main complaint. If the fee is a dealbreaker for you, Ultrahuman is the obvious place to look. Our breakdown of what Oura does without a membership may settle it.

Accuracy: what has been tested

Oura has a research record. An Oura-funded study of 96 adults found the Gen3 matched home lab sleep studies on total sleep and most stages.[9] An independent 2025 meta-analysis of six studies found no significant average difference between Oura and lab measurements, though individual stage estimates varied widely.[8] Those studies cover the Gen3; independent validation of the Ring 4 is thin.

For Ultrahuman, we searched PubMed on October 18, 2026 and found no peer-reviewed study comparing its ring against a lab sleep study. That does not mean it is inaccurate. It means you would be buying on the company's word. Either way, treat sleep stage numbers from any ring as estimates.

US buyers: check availability first

Oura won a patent case against Ultrahuman at the US International Trade Commission. The final ruling took effect on October 21, 2025, with exclusion orders that blocked Ultrahuman ring imports into the US.[5] TechRadar reported that retailers could keep selling existing stock and that rings bought before the cutoff would still be supported.[6] In March 2026, Tom's Guide reported that Ultrahuman's redesigned Ring PRO was officially coming to the US,[7] and Ultrahuman's US store lists the Ring PRO today.[3] Legal disputes like this can change, so check the store page on the day you buy. In Canada the Ring AIR is on Ultrahuman's Canadian store.[4]

Common questions

Does Ultrahuman need a subscription?

Ultrahuman says there are no recurring subscription fees for accessing your ring data. You pay once for the ring.

Can you buy Ultrahuman in the US?

It changed in 2025. A US International Trade Commission ruling that took effect on October 21, 2025 banned Ultrahuman ring imports after Oura won a patent case. In March 2026 Tom's Guide reported that the redesigned Ring PRO was coming to the US, and Ultrahuman's US store now lists it. Check the store before you buy.

Which is more accurate, Oura or Ultrahuman?

Oura has more evidence. Several published studies compare the Oura Gen3 against lab sleep studies, some funded by Oura. We found no peer-reviewed study comparing an Ultrahuman ring with a lab sleep study in a PubMed search on October 18, 2026. That is not proof Ultrahuman is less accurate, only that it has not been shown.
