How we review sleep and recovery tech

Every device page uses the same scorecard, so you can compare them. Stars appear only on devices we have bought and used ourselves.

Hands-on vs research-based

The scorecard

CriterionWhat we look at
Published accuracy evidencePeer-reviewed comparisons against lab sleep studies (polysomnography) or ECG. We name who funded each study. No study found means we say so.
Real-world effect (hands-on only)What the device changed in our routine after weeks of use, and what it did not.
Battery and chargingThe maker's claim, and on hands-on pages, how charging fits daily life.
Subscription and 3-year costDevice price plus three years of any membership, from the maker's own price pages, in US and Canadian dollars.
Without the subscriptionWhat still works if you stop paying.
Returns, warranty and data exportReturn window, warranty length, and whether you can download your own data.

What we do not claim

We do not run a sleep lab. Consumer trackers estimate sleep stages, and published studies show they agree with lab sleep studies far better on total sleep than on deep or REM sleep. We report that instead of quoting a single accuracy percentage from marketing. Nothing here is medical advice, and no wearable here diagnoses sleep disorders.

Money and rankings

We earn commissions through affiliate links, marked "(paid link)". Quality decides what we recommend; commission only breaks ties between products we would recommend anyway. No brand pays for placement, and if a brand ever sponsored us, it would not change a ranking. When our link gets you no discount, we say so. Details on the affiliate disclosure page.

Updates

We recheck the facts on device pages about every 90 days, and sooner when a price or model changes. The "Facts checked" date at the top of each page shows the last check. The "Updated" date only changes when the content does.
